2000 AD
Although the accuracy of our current dating system cannot be assured, notionally, at least, it is 2000 years since
a most important event in the history of the world happened - our Lord Jesus Christ was born. The Lord from
heaven, the eternal Son of God, took part in our humanity. In the language of the Bible, "the Word was made
flesh and dwelt among us."
So fundamental was the effect of His life upon the world, such an influence did He exert upon the course of world
history, that we date our calendar from the time of His birth. Whole nations have based their laws and way of life
on His teachings. Great works of art, architecture and music have found their inspiration in Him. When someone
recently complained to the BBC Music Magazine that too much of the music selected by them had a 'very heavy
Christian emphasis', the editor rightly replied, "However, the fact is that in the last thousand years, the church has
played the key role in the creation of music."
You must also bear in mind that, despite the many unpleasant things that have been done in the name of
Christianity, our Lord Jesus Christ did not teach us to slaughter others to possess so-called holy places or to fight
and hate those who hold different doctrines. On the contrary, He taught us to love our enemies, to do good to
those who hate and persecute us, to turn the other cheek, to forgive and be merciful.
Easter, Christmas and the Year 2000 - are these not all occasions to celebrate what Jesus did when He came to
this desperately needy world to save it from sin and destruction? That message of 'peace on earth; goodwill
toward men' is not automatic. The Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again to bring us forgiveness and
eternal life. Jesus Christ did all this to bring us back to God but YOU have to respond to what He has done. His
salvation is at a personal level. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that
WHOSOEVER believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3 v 16).
It began 2000 years ago when people without hope, lost and in despair, put their faith and trust in Jesus and
experienced that glorious transformation in their lives that only the Saviour can bring when he sets a sinner free.
It has continued throughout the centuries for people from every age and from nations all over the world, and we
too have found that He is just the same today. No wonder we have cause to celebrate with the arrival of the
2000th year. What Jesus Christ has done for others, what He has been doing over the last two thousand years,
He can do for you. He takes away the sin with its guilt and shame; He gives new life, life in all its fulness.
Make this 2000th year special by committing your life to the One who is the source of all life - the Lord Jesus
Christ.
