"LORD, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean." (Matthew 8:2)
A leper spoke those words to Jesus at a time when leprosy was the most hated of all
diseases, and lepers were the most despised of all men.
Nobody touched a leper.
Nobody spoke to a leper.
They were outcasts.
And so this man said "If thou wilt" not "if you can" because
he knew that Jesus could. But "If thou wilt" because this leper didn't know
if even Jesus would have anything to do with such an outcast.
"And Jesus put forth His hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean.
And immediately his leprosy was cleansed." (Matthew 8:3)
In His love and compassion, Jesus not only healed the man (He could have done that with just a word)
but He touched him too!
He understood the man's need, not just of healing, but also of human contact.
There are people today who are be regarded as outcasts - even by themselves.
People who, because they have made mistakes, have done things wrong, that they are considered by some as
unworthy of their friendship - unworthy of normal social contact.
People with secrets, 'skeletons in the cupboard' that they dare not let out. Scared of the effect it will have on
their everyday life.
People who believe that even Jesus would never have anything to do with them. That there is nothing He
could do for them. Their sin is too great and besides, their shame is too deep for them ever to confess that sin.
But Jesus knows. And Jesus said nearly 2000 years ago - "for I came not to judge the world, but to save the
world". (John 12:47)
Jesus has not changed.
He is the same today as He was when He touched that leper.
Jesus can transform the most desperate life. His touch can totally remove even the blackest sin.
Every believer - every Christian, before they knew Jesus, was lost in sin.
But God is not going to turn anybody away!
There is nobody so low that God's love cannot reach them.
All it takes is the realisation of who He is, the belief that He came to die to take away the sin of the whole
world, and a simple statement of faith:
LORD, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.
